I had been working with Placebo for a few years and David Bowie was a huge fan of theirs. I got a call from David’s people and he wanted me to come and photograph him rehearsing for some shows at The Hanover Grand in London, a small and intimate venue.
He was so relaxed and it was a real honour to meet and work with him obviously. It felt odd taking posed live shots of David Bowie with lights set up on the stage, I was pretty nervous so I made it snappy.
Later that night the first of two night shows happened and it blew me away. They were rehearsals in fact for Bowie’s 50th birthday gigs in NYC to follow.
The line up featured Reeves Gabrels on guitar and the wonderful Gail Ann Dorsey on bass. He played ‘Fashion’, ‘Queen Bitch’, ‘Fame’ as well as most of ‘Earthling’ and tracks from it like ‘I’m Afraid of Americans’, ‘Little Wonder’ and ‘Seven Years in Tibet’.
It’s a sad time to lose such an visual icon and there will never be another Bowie that’s for sure.
